Local casino markets have kept Nevada’s gaming industry humming along during the pandemic, but Lawton says things are changing. In March and April, Downtown hit revenue records. The area’s total win in May of $75.2 million hit the second-highest total for monthly revenue in the district’s history. Downtown Las Vegas, which caters to Vegas locals, saw its current year-to-date revenue jump 13% compared with the same time period in 2019 and revenues are up 12% since casinos re-opened in June. The local gambling market is still on fire. Locals and visitors within driving distance, however, have become a reliable source of action for the state’s casinos: drive-in traffic into Las Vegas was up 9% from April 2019. Hotel occupancy was down 24% and the number of airline passengers visiting was down 32% during the same time. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s latest report from April found that the number of people who visited Vegas that month was down 27% compared with April 2019. The numbers are surprising, considering how dependent the Strip is on tourists and business conventions, both of which have yet to fully rebound.
